PREPARATION FOR CONFESSION
Examination of Conscience:
Preparation for Confession should be thoughtful, not routined. It is well to first ask the Lord for light: Lord, may I know myself; may I know You!" (St. Augustine) May I know my own selfishness, ignorance weakness, and know too that you are ready to lift me up and sustain me as I climb toward the spiritual heights you called me to attain. May I distrust myself and trust in you! Enlighten my mind that I may see all my sins clearly; soften my heart that I may be truly sorry for them; give me the grace and courage to confess them sincerely, and thus obtain your pardon through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour Amen.
How long has it been since my last confession? Did I receive absolution? Did I omit a mortal sin in my last confession? If so, was it intentional, or through forgetfulness? Did I willfully make a false statement regarding a mortal sin in my last confession? Was I truly sorry for all my sins? Did I perform the penance imposed upon me by the Priest?
Try to determine as nearly as possible the number of times that you committed each sin, especially the grievous ones. Also mention those circumstances which may change the nature of the sins confessed.
Prayer :
Almighty and merciful God, you have brought me here in the name of your Son to receive your mercy and grace in my time of need. Open my eyes to see the evil I have done. Touch my heart and convert me to yourself. Where sin has separated me from you, may your love unite me to you again: where sin has brought weakness, may your power heal and strengthen; where sin has brought death, may your Spirit raise to new life. Give me a new heart to love you, so that my life may reflect the image of your Son, may the world see the glory of Christ revealed in your Church, and come to know that he is the Holy One you have sent, Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.
